July may still be all about summer fun, pool days, and popsicles, but let’s be honest, back-to-school season is creeping up fast. Instead of waiting for the last-minute rush in August, now is the perfect time to start easing your kids back into simple routines that will help make the transition smoother for everyone (including you!).

Here are five easy routines to start now that will make a huge difference once school is back in session:

  1. Reset the Sleep Schedule (Slowly!)

During summer, bedtimes tend to drift later and later and mornings start whenever the kids roll out of bed. While that’s part of the fun, it can make those early school mornings feel like a shock to the system.

Try moving bedtime and wake-up time up by just 15 minutes each week. A gradual shift will make mornings easier and prevent the dreaded “first week meltdown.”

Reset the Sleep Schedule
  1. Reinforce a Morning Routine

Backpacks, breakfast, brushing teeth, sound familiar? Now’s the time to start practicing a consistent (and calm) morning routine. Even if you’re not heading to school yet, have your child go through the motions of getting ready.

This helps:

  • Build independence
  • Reduce morning chaos
  • Give your child a sense of ownership over their day

Helpful hint: A visual checklist can help younger kids stay on track.

Reinforce a Morning Routine
  1. Make Reading a Daily Habit

If your child has been glued to screens this summer, you’re not alone. Bring reading back into focus by carving out 15–20 minutes of quiet reading time each day.

Let them choose books that spark their interest! Whether it’s a mystery series like Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys, silly stories like Dog Man or Diary of a Wimpy Kid, fact-packed books like Guinness World Records or National Geographic Kids, or even interactive books like Choose Your Own Adventure, it all counts. The goal is to rebuild focus and make reading something they look forward to, especially before schoolwork ramps up.

Make Reading a Daily Habit
  1. Get Moving (with Purpose)

Long days at the beach are great, but structured physical activity helps kids improve focus, sleep better, and handle stress.

That’s one of the reasons we love gymnastics so much, it combines movement with discipline, coordination, and confidence-building. If your child hasn’t been active recently, now’s the perfect time to jump back in. (Psst…our summer classes are still in full swing!)

Get Moving (with Purpose)
  1. Reinstate “Quiet Time” or Homework Hour

Even if there’s no homework yet, getting kids used to a daily quiet work period will help them ease into the routine of focused learning.

Try a daily “brain break” after lunch. Some fun ideas include puzzles, journaling, coloring, or reading. It’s not about perfection; it’s about rebuilding stamina for sitting still and staying engaged when the school year starts.

Easing into simple routines now can take the pressure off later. You don’t have to give up summer fun, just sprinkle in a bit of structure here and there. Your whole family will feel more prepared (and a lot less stressed) when the first day of school arrives.
